Cristiano Ronaldo 900th career goal. Not part of the Ballon d’Or shortlist, no problem as Cristiano Ronaldo goes about his business as usual. The Portuguese superstar scored his record-extending 900th career goal as his team defeated Croatia 2-1 in the first game of the UEFA Nations League on Thursday. Ronaldo inched closer to the milestone goal when he scored a glorious free-kick for his club Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia a few days ago. Last night, the 39-year-old reached the big milestone and celebrated as if he scored the first goal of his career.

Ronaldo, who plays his club football in Saudi Arabia, turned in a Nuno Mendes cross in the 34th minute of the match at the Estadio da Luz to script history in professional football.

He appeared emotional as he celebrated the goal, his 131st strike in a Portugal shirt. Half of his goals were scored for Real Madrid, with the remainder spread across his spells at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United and current club Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo also took to social media and reacted to the history 900th goal milestone, while also giving a subtle hint that he isn’t thinking about hanging up his boots anytime soon.

Diogo Dalot’s goal had put Portugal in front early on before Ronaldo netted, with a Dalot own-goal reducing the deficit before the break.

Cristiano Ronaldo 900th career goal . The teams are in Group A1 of the latest edition of the Nations League along with Poland and Scotland.

Portugal host Scotland in Lisbon on Sunday. Ronaldo, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, is already the top-scoring player in professional football history. Following him in the second spot is his arch-rival Lionel Messi, with 838 recorded goals in professional football.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal on Tuesday (August 20, 2024) announced that they would extend support to the Bharat Bandh call given by various organizations on Wednesday (August 21, 2024) in response to the Supreme Court’s recent verdict on Scheduled Caste (SC) reservations.

The National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organizations (NACDAOR) has has taken an opposing view to a recent Supreme Court judgment by a seven-judge bench that, according to them, undermines the earlier ruling of a nine-judge bench in the landmark Indira Sawhney case, which established the framework for reservations in India.

On Wednesday, the Bahujan Samaj Party also extended support to the day-long Bharat Bandh, and accused the BJP and the Congress of colluding to end reservation. It said these parties and others should understand the necessity of reservation and not play with it.

JMM has asked its all leaders, district presidents, secretaries and district coordinators to actively participate in the 14-hour nationwide strike and extend their support.

“The recent verdict given by the Supreme Court on the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe reservations would prove to be an obstacle in the path of upliftment and strengthening of the SC/ST classes,” JMM general secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey said in a statement.

RJD state general secretary and media in-charge Kailash Yadav said that the party has decided to extend its support and participate in the day-long strike.

State Congress spokesperson Rakesh Sinha also said that the party has also extended support to the bandh call.

Taken from the audio clip that has gone viral in Facebook, the truth behind the heinous crime that took place on R.G.Kar on 9th August. All the government medical institutions are sham and the principal of the college is one of the most corrupted criminal in history, has created a nexus which includes medical interns and pgt who comes from strong politically connected background, they take money to pass the doctors, they run s*x racket and d*ug racket in the college.

The victim got to know about all these and threatened to expose the truth in social media, complained to the HOD and principal not knowing they are behind this, first they tried to threaten her by damaging her newly bought car, gave her 36 hours of shift and so much more, but she stood strong, so they planned to remove her.

Four women interns were there in seminar hall that night eating dinner one of them being one intern’s girlfriend.

She had a fight with her and later they left her all alone, later at night those criminals came in drunken state.

Tortured her in inhumane possible way, even one intern woman helped to tie her hands, they walked on her back with boots, ruptured her skull, broke her pelvic bone and collar bone, bit her nails and mass off, choked her

Then sent the scapegoat who’s under arrest right now to rape the corps, so he could take the fall and would be out of jail in six months.

They tried their best to remove evidence, state police helped their best to do so, the washroom where they washed off blood was destroyed in the name of renovation, they tried their best to erase all form of evidence, as it is in hands of CBI now they will be safe and sound. The horror of this incident is enough to numb any person, so just imagine what kind doctors is our nation raising? This was only an eye opener about the endless and merciless corruption of the government and the system.

Astronaut Sunita Williams one astronauts marooned in space may sound like the plot of a Hollywood blockbuster, but for two NASA crew members, it is now a reality. Commander Barry Wilmore and pilot Sunita Williams are currently in limbo on the International Space Station (ISS).

They arrived in the Boeing Starliner spacecraft – the first test of the spaceship with astronauts. Wilmore and Astronaut Sunita Williams were supposed to stay on the ISS for around eight days and return on the same spacecraft. But there is now debate about the safety of Starliner after it experienced helium leaks and thruster problems on its way to the ISS.

In coming days, NASA and Boeing may decide to clear Starliner to carry the astronauts back to Earth. This means their stay might not last too much longer. But if officials decide against Starliner, the astronauts face waiting an additional six months in orbit before returning. So how do astronauts cope with a potential six-month wait for a lift home?

Waiting for things is difficult at the best of times. Under normal circumstances, it is frustrating, stressful and anxiety provoking. But in extreme situations, with high stakes, waiting can be purgatory.

Part of the reason that waiting is difficult is that it distorts our sense of time. Think of last time you were waiting for a delayed train, test results or a text from a potential new partner. Did it fly by or drag? For most people, time spent waiting crawls at a glacial pace. As a result, delays and periods of anticipation often feel much longer than they actually are.

Waiting slows our perception of time, because it changes the amount of time that we spend thinking about time. During normal daily life we often ignore time; our brains have a limited capacity. If time isn’t important, we simply don’t think about it, and this helps it to pass quickly.

However, as academics who research the effects of time on human psychology and biology, our ongoing work with crew members at research stations in Antarctica aims to shed light on whether waiting in extreme environments is different to waiting during normal daily life.

In discussions with U.S. Congress members, bin Salman reportedly drew a parallel between his situation and that of former Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat, who was assassinated after signing a peace treaty with Israel.

The Crown Prince questioned the measures the U.S. had taken to protect Sadat, highlighting his own fears as he navigates the potential fallout from a deal that could provoke strong reactions across the Arab world, particularly given the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The Crown Prince also shared his concerns about losing support within Saudi Arabia, where public sentiment is strongly aligned with the Palestinian cause. “Saudis care very deeply about this,” he reportedly told U.S. lawmakers, emphasizing the significance of the issue to the broader Middle Eastern populace and the potential threat to his position as the guardian of Islam’s holiest sites.

The potential agreement between Saudi Arabia, the U.S., and Israel remains shrouded in secrecy, with key details still under negotiation. The deal could include U.S. security guarantees, assistance for a civilian nuclear program in Saudi Arabia, and significant economic investments. However, the Crown Prince’s apprehensions reflect the high stakes involved in striking such a deal, as he navigates the delicate balance between forging new diplomatic ties and maintaining stability within his own nation

On Sunday, in his first T20I since the 10-wicket semifinal loss to England at the 2022 World Cup in Adelaide, Virat Kohli seems determined to prove there are more strings to his bow.

The scorecard will show 29 off 16 balls, hardly much for a player of Virat Kohli’s pedigree, but how he batted and got out seemed to suggest he was willing to go against his nature to fit into the new brand of T20 batting that India is trying to embrace.

Kohli, even in the shortest international format, is known more as an accumulator at the start of his innings, before he showcases his rich repertoire of strokes and going into overdrive as the innings reaches its climax. When he first comes in, the most characteristic feature of his batting is his speed between the wickets that keeps the scoreboard moving and gets him into the rhythm of the game.

On Sunday, in his first T20I since the 10-wicket semifinal loss to England at the 2022 World Cup in Adelaide, Kohli wasn’t going to play the waiting game. He was in the middle in the first over itself, replacing Rohit Sharma, and was back before the Powerplay got over. But the former captain, for once, wasn’t playing the situation or the target but trying to prove that there were more gears to his batting which can be activated even early on in a race.

The first ball Kohli faced, from left-armer Fazalhaq Farooqi, was driven firmly to mid-on. The second, from mystery spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman, was a length ball outside off, which was lofted over mid-off for a boundary. No need for the niceties of having a look or rotating strike. The last ball of the same over was met by an uncharacteristic slog-sweep wide of long-on. That it was a full ball well outside off-stump indicated that the shot might well have been a premeditated one.

Whenever Kohli’s prowess in the T20 format is discussed, the straight six he hit off a hard-length ball from Pakistan speedster Haris Rauf during the World Cup game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground comes up. Now, Naveen-ul-Haq is no Rauf, but there’s history between him and Kohli, and the latter rekindled memories with a flat-bat shot over the bowler’s head off a much wider ball that landed just inside the boundary.

There were a few ungainly hoicks and aerial shots that one doesn’t associate with the batting technician that Kohli is, but it reflected the message he was trying to send about his utility in the format.

Mujeeb was handsomely cover-driven to the fence, bisecting the off-side ring, when the bowler offered width on a full ball. There was not much of asking-rate pressure at this moment, when Kohli set his sights on Naveen again. The medium pacer was slog-swept across the line, as if he was a spinner, to the long-on boundary. The next ball, Kohli tried to clear mid-off but failed.

All this while, Yashasvi Jaiswal was going full throttle at the other end, and Kohli seemed intent on showing that he could keep pace. Much talk about the return of Kohli and Rohit to the T20 fold surrounds their strike rates, but he seems determined to prove there are more strings to his bow.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday evening named a 16-man squad for the first two Tests against England which begins from January 25 onwards, 22-year-old Dhruv Jurel earned his maiden call-up as a back-up wicketkeeping option as Ishan Kishan, who had reportedly taken a break from cricket citing mental fatigue, has not been named.

BCCI name 16-man squad for first two Tests against England
BCCI name 16-man squad for first two Tests against England

The squad also does not include veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami as he continues to recover from the ankle injury he incurred during the 2023 ODI World Cup campaign in November last year. He was optimistic about returning to the Test squad, but the selectors probably wanted him to take further rest as a precautionary move ahead of the final stages of the series against England.

Besides Shami, the fast-bowling line-up does not have Prasidh Krishna, who featured in both the games in the Test series in South Africa, picking just two wickets for 130 runs. It was earlier reported on Friday that the pacer had picked up a quadriceps injury on Day 1 of Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy clash against Gujarat in Ahmedabad

Avesh Khan, meanwhile, has retained his place in the squad. On the back of his performance for India A during the South Africa tour, he was added to the main squad ahead of the match in Cape Town. Avesh hence joins the likes of vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar to form a familiar-looking strong pace attack for India while the spin combination comprises of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.

The surprise in the squad has been the addition of Uttar Pradesh cricketer Jurel, who will be a back-up wicketkeeper to KL Rahul, who kept wickets in both the match of the Test series in South Africa, and KS Bharat. The youngster was a part of the India A team that played two matches against their South African counterparts in December last year. Jurel scored 69 in the second match at Benoni and in the first round group game of the Ranji Trophy, he scored 63 for Uttar Pradesh against Kerala. The 22-year-old, who had made his First-Class debut last year against Vidarbha, has so far made 790 runs from 15 matches at an average of 46 with a hundred and five fifties in the domestic circuit.

This will be India’s third assignment in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle and first at home. They had earlier won the two-match series in West Indies 1-0 after the second game was drawn, while they held hosts South Africa to a 1-1 draw in a two-match series earlier this year.

India’s squad for first two Tests vs England: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), KS Bharat (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Avesh Khan

Swachh Survekshan Awards-2023: The NDMC area was the cleanest city within Union territories while the New Delhi area also ranked third among 35 capital regions

Indore and Surat were jointly declared the cleanest cities in India in the Swachh Survekshan Awards-2023, presented by President Droupadi Murmu at the Bharat Mandapam on Thursday. This was the seventh time in a row that the Madhya Pradesh city won the accolade, and the first that Surat got the pole position, although shared.

Navi Mumbai, which came third in last year’s competition, retained its third position.

On the other end of the spectrum, three of the lowest-ranked cities in the million-plus population category were in West Bengal: Haora (Howrah) at the bottom, with Asansol and Kolkata following closely as the worst-performing cities on the cleanliness indicators. Faridabad, in Haryana, and Madurai, Tamil Nadu, were the fourth- and fifth-worst cities on the list.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was ranked 90th out of 446 cities (in the above 100,000 population category), and the New Delhi Municipal Council area secured the seventh spot (the NDMC area was ranked third in the capital cities list).

The Swachh Survekshan survey is at the centre of the Union government’s Swachh Bharat mission, which was launched as one of the big-ticket initiatives by Narendra Modi government in its first few years in power. For the eighth edition of the survey, 3,000 assessors fanned out across 4,500 cities (of these, 3,970 have a population of fewer than 100,000 people) to record a city’s performance on 46 parameters, including waste collection, inclusive toilets and improved plastic waste management.

Launching the Swachh Survekshan-2023 dashboard at the Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, President Murmu said the G20 Leaders’ Delhi Declaration committed to enhancing environmentally sound waste management, substantially reducing waste generation by 2030, and highlighting the importance of zero waste initiatives. Appreciating the theme of “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” for the 2024 cleanliness survey, she said: “It is highly commendable that in the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission, circular waste management is being followed and the circular economy process of recycling and reusing more and more items is proving helpful for sustainable development.”

Union minister of housing and urban affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, said every city in India is open-defection-free. “This became possible because the Swachh Bharat Mission went from (being) a government programme to becoming a Jan Andolan (people’s movement).”

“With a very modest beginning in 2016, today 447 cities and urban local bodies participate in the Swachh Survekshan. In this 8th edition, we received feedback from 12 crore people,” the minister said.

The NDMC area was the cleanest city within Union territories while the New Delhi area also ranked third among 35 capital regions.

Among smaller cities, with fewer than 100,000 residents, Saswad in Maharashtra got the cleanest city award followed by Patan in Chhattisgarh and Lonavala in Maharashtra.

Varanasi and Prayagraj were adjudged the cleanest Ganga towns, while Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh were adjudged the best-performing states.

Among states overall, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh were at the top, while Rajasthan, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh ranked at the bottom of the cleanliness standings.

Highlighting the increased waste production in the last few years, Puri said: “Cleanliness has become a social revolution and the impact can be seen everywhere. Waste processing has increased from 15-16% in 2014 to 76% in 2023. In the next 2-3 years, we will process 100% waste produced.”

The Union territory of Chandigarh was picked as the best “Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher” – a tag given to a city with adequate institutional capacity, manpower and equipment, along with safe working conditions for sanitation workers.

By March 2024, all Indian cities are supposed to be declared Safaimitra Surakshit under the ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment’s National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem Scheme.

For 2023, the Swacch Survekshan awards were based on the theme “Waste to Wealth for Garbage-Free Cities”.

The cities this time around were marked on a total of 9,500 marks, of which 53% was based on service level progress, 26% on certification of cleanliness of public spaces and toilets and 23% based on feedback from the residents.

From being struck by the plague in 1994 to becoming the cleanest Indian city, Surat’s turnaround has been an “uphill task”. “The city faces increasing migration and industrialisation challenges”, said the city’s municipal commissioner, Shalini Agarwal. “But we integrated our infrastructure with sanitation and waste management facilities. We used our integrated command and control centre to monitor waste management. We made cleanliness a mass movement, resulting in us scoring well across all the parameters,” she said.

On the other hand, the rankings regarding Bengal cities became a point of contention. Atin Ghosh, deputy mayor of Kolkata, said: “I have not read the report myself. But if it suggests that the cities of Bengal including Kolkata are among the worst performing cities, then it suggests that the report is politically motivated. People can see for themselves when they walk around the city what’s for real.”

Bharti Chaturvedi, founder of Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group, which specialises in waste management, said the awards, besides adding healthy competition among cities and states, act as a platform for peer learning, which was previously missing. “Cities in west India, namely Indore, Surat, and Navi Mumbai, seem to be doing better than the cities to the north. In fact, the states as a whole are doing a lot better than their north-Indian counterparts. This shows that the residents of these cities engage differently, and there is a lot to learn from that. The other trend that has been consistent in the last three to four years is that smaller cities are outperforming their bigger cousins. This shows that we must take a more decentralised approach to waste management.”

Rohit Sharma had a forgetful outing on return as the Indian skipper was involved in a horrible mixup with Shubman Gill in the 1st Afghanistan T20I.

A lot was expected from Rohit Sharma when the veteran opener walked out to bat for Team India in a T20I for the first time since the heartbreaking World Cup 2022 exit to England. Leading the Virat Kohli-less side in his first T20I after 14 months, Rohit opened the innings with his partner-in-crime Shubman Gill in the series opener against Afghanistan at Mohali on Thursday.

After playing a dot in Fazalhaq Farooqi’s first over of the Indian innings, Rohit came down the track and creamed the ball towards the mid-off region. Nothing but a spectator at the non-striker’s end, Gill was caught ball-watching as the Indian opener paid no attention to Rohit’s call for a quick single. Gill tried to send Rohit back, but the Indian had already made a darting run to complete the single. What happened next made headlines as Rohit lashed out at Gill after the horrible mixup.

Speaking after the match in the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit was all smiles when he was asked to recall his cheap dismissal in the series opener between India and Afghanistan. “These things happen (on the run-out). When it happens you feel frustrated, you want to be out there and score runs for the team. Everything will not go your way. We won the game, that’s more important. I wanted Gill to carry on, unfortunately, got out after playing a very good little innings,” Rohit said.

Shivam Dube shines on Rohit’s return

In his return game at Mohali, the 36-year-old was dismissed for a two-ball duck. However, India ended up registering a comfortable win over the visitors as all-rounder Shivam Dube delivered the goods with a quick-fire knock. Dube remained unbeaten on 60 off 40 balls to help India complete the 159-run target in 17.3 overs. For the hosts, Gill (23), Tilak Varma (26) and Jitesh Sharma (31) also made crucial contributions with the bat. For scoring his second half-century and picking a wicket, Dube was named the Player of the Match.

What Rohit said about match-winner Dube

“Lot of positives. Shivam Dube, the way Jitesh batted, Tilak as well and then Rinku is in good form as well. We want to keep trying different things – try and bowl our bowlers in different situations of the game, like you saw today, Washi bowled the 19th over. We want to challenge ourselves in the areas we are slightly uncomfortable with and the bowlers are not used to that. We want to try and do that. Keeping all of those things in mind, we’ll try and do whatever is possible but not at the cost of the game,” Rohit added.
