Users demand compensation for ‘loss’

“You are my broker and I am not able to transact on your app. And unable to execute orders. What is going on? Who will pay for my losses? Don’t do this type of cheap manipulation. Very disgusting. Shameful,” a user wrote on X, claiming to have faced losses due to the glitch.

“We people lost our money due to a stock brokerage firm technical issues. Who Will compensate us? I lost my ₹19,700 money,” another user said.

Groww is the top stock brokerage in India. According to National Stock Exchange data, as of the end of September 2023, Groww had 66.3 lakh active investors, whereas Zerodha had 64.8 lakh.

Groww says ‘technical issue’

As users complained about the glitch, the fintech firm acknowledged the issue. Without providing details of the issue, it said that they are actively addressing the technical glitch experienced by users.

“Hello! We apologize for the inconvenience. Our team is addressing a technical issue and working to resolve it promptly. Your patience is highly appreciated, and we’ll be back to normal operations shortly. Thank you for your understanding. Team Groww,” posted the company on X

Later, the issue was resolved by the trading platform, as users continued to ask about compensation for their claimed loss due to the glitch.

His father was a judge, his uncle was a civil rights activist, and another uncle became the first Hispanic commissioner appointed by a president.

Sam Ximenes is a pioneering space architect who has a big vision and plans to make San Antonio a hub for space exploration and architecture.

Space architecture is the design and building of physical structures for human needs in outer space. As the field grows, more people are needed to build space stations, habitats and lunar or planetary bases.

And while his local companies achieve success through design, Ximenes is recruiting San Antonio students for the workforce, making STEM education, tech and architecture accessible.

His work, belief in education, and entrepreneurial spirit follow the steps of his family, who achieved the Mexican American dream through the same values.

Born at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston and baptized at the San Fernando Cathedral, the San Antonio native founded the Exploration Architecture Corporation, known as XArc, and Astroport Space Technologies, companies focused on designing and developing lunar surface infrastructure from raw moon material.

This year, their work attracted more than $1 million in NASA grants to fund technologies needed for lunar surface landing and launch pads.

In 2016, he founded the nonprofit WEX Foundation, which offers programs for children in San Antonio that introduce them to space exploration and engineering. It’s named after his late father, Judge Waldo E. Ximenes, who he described as an unwavering proponent of educational opportunity for those who were economically or socially disadvantaged.

Ximenes has worked for aerospace companies like Lockheed Martin, L-3 Communications, and Futron Corporation, but he eventually came back to his roots in San Antonio. In May 2023, Ximenes was inducted into the San Antonio Aviation and Aerospace Hall of Fame.

He comes from a line of exemplary Mexican American public servants: His uncle Vicente T. Ximenes was the first Hispanic commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Another uncle, Edward Ximenes, was the first Hispanic member appointed to the Board of Regents for the University of Texas System. For 25 years, he advocated for a UT campus at San Antonio. Today, a UTSA campus driveway street and a building are named after him.

His family had roots in Floresville, but Ximenes grew up as a military brat, moving often. At seven years old, he lived in Germany at the height of the Cold War.

In a 2013 TedxSan Antonio Talk, Ximenes said he found a cave one day. He lay on his belly and crawled to the end of the tunnel in pure darkness and found a box of German coins.

“That sense of adventure and discovery into the darkness of that cave has never left me,” he said in his speech.

Today, Ximenes’ companies are developing technology to explore caves on the lunar surface.

But where does that tech come from to get to the moon — or Mars?

“Right here,” he said. “You can’t tell me the economic development of this lunar base is not tied to the economic development of the community that sponsored it: San Antonio.”

Because of the growth of his companies that work with space companies and agencies, like Virgin Galactic, the U.S. military and NASA, Ximenes spends most of his days doing administrative work.

Much of what he talked about in that Tedx talk a decade ago has come to fruition, thanks to NASA depending on private companies and other institutions like the Southwest Research Institute and the University of Texas at San Antonio to advance space exploration.

Now, Ximenes is predicting a continuation of those partnerships. “What’s going to happen next is we’re going to build an economy,” he said. “The next economy is going to be in space: A cislunar economy,” referring to the space between the earth and the moon.

And as people and starships begin to come and go while they dig for resources on the moon or Mars, Ximenes said fuel depots for them will be essential.

Grinning while he speaks, Ximenes has the enthusiastic energy of a visionary, but has the business plans to back it up.

Astroport’s goal is to create the technology and architecture to be a space port fixed base operator, similar to business models that serve aircrafts, for example, doing refueling and maintenance.

“We want to be the same thing on the moon for the rockets [and] lunar landers coming and going, to resupply,” he said. “It’s the same model that provided the shuttles for the gold miners in the old days. We’re not digging for gold, we’re providing the shovels, is kind of my idea. … We’re going to be the port, the gateway to the lunar locations.”

But that sort of work can’t be done in the future without access to STEM education for young people to learn the necessary skills to succeed in the future. That’s where his WEX Foundation comes in.

On Dec. 4, Melody Herrera walked inside the Boeing Center at Tech Port with her 8-year-old nephew for an Aerospace workshop inside of Area 21, an introduction of what the WEX Foundation’s space exploration LCATS program.

“Recently we’ve had school closures that are happening and I wanted to make sure they were aware of that because our students need resources,” Herrera said, explaining she had proactively reached out to Area 21 about opportunities for her nephew.

“I hope it just gives him a learning opportunity to let him know his options and also just to help him with other executive function skills and knowledge that he’s not getting in school,” she said.

Out of all his ventures, the WEX Foundation is Ximenes’ favorite endeavor. He chuckled describing the excitement on students’ faces when they explore the lunar cave sites through the program.

“We have students that have gone on to MIT. … Seeing that happen is very satisfying, seeing they’re being successful,” he said. “We have students that have gone on to become NASA interns as well. … It’s still a young program, but we’re seeing the success.”

Ximenes’ career in space architecture took off after a business venture that ended in bankruptcy. He went back to school for a master’s in space architecture from the University of Houston.

At the time, the new program was called design for extreme environments, said Larry Toups, an adjunct professor at the University of Houston’s Saskawa International Center for Space Architecture who studied and worked with Ximenes on projects in the late 1980s.

Toups, who did space architecture for NASA’s International Space Station for 25 years, worked beside Ximenes on projects that showed Ximenes “has a vision,” and that he’s good at looking at the big picture.

“When you’re working on a project, such as an international space station, … [he’s] able to focus down on those areas that particularly touch the humans,” Toups said. “In the case of space, the astronauts themselves.”

Space architecture is a relatively new field, and the community of people who have backgrounds like Ximenes’ is narrow, Toups said. He recalled Ximenes being one of the first people of color to be in a program like space architecture, especially because the number of students was still low.

“Being such an emerging field, he’s done a lot to break barriers and identify opportunities. He does that by example of what he’s done and what he’s doing now,” Toups said. “He still maintains that enthusiasm he had when I first met him.”

WhatsApp banned more than 71 lakh accounts in India in November last year, the company revealed in its latest monthly report. The messaging platform owned by Facebook parent Meta said that it banned over 19 lakh accounts in India “proactively”, which means the company took action on these accounts before it received any user reports of policy violations. WhatsApp also acted on a handful of over 8,000 grievances received from users in the same month, according to the firm’s report.

In its latest monthly report published in compliance with the Information Technology
(Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules (2021
) WhatsApp says that it banned 71,96,000 accounts between November 1 and November 30 last year. These were accounts that were registered from a phone number with the +91 international prefix, according to the messaging platform.

WhatsApp says that it banned 19,54,000 of more than 71 lakh accounts last November proactively — users didn’t have to report these accounts for violating the company’s policies. While WhatsApp allows users to report accounts, the platform also employs on-platform abuse detection systems that can proactively detect policy violations.

As per existing regulations, WhatsApp receives grievances from users via emails sent to grievance_officer_wa@support.whatsapp.com and via mail sent to the India Grievance Officer via post. The company says that reports related to account assistance, help with accessing features, service feedback, denied requests related to banned accounts, or accounts that did not violate the company’s terms and the laws of India.

In order to comply with the IT Rules (2021), WhatsApp said it acted on 6 requests — one related to ban appeals and the others related to miscellaneous support queries — received as grievances by the company’s Grievance Officer. In November 2023, the company received 8,841 grievances and complied with 8 orders received from the Grievance Appellate Committee during the same month.

Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Signal and others have long had an option to share your location with your contacts. It’s a quick way to let your friends and family know where you are or send them your live location to help them navigate. Now, Google is also bringing real-time location sharing natively on the Maps app on AndroidiOS, and PC. Google users can share their live location with their contacts via the Location Sharing option in Maps.

With the Location Sharing feature on Google Maps, you can choose who can access your location details and for how long. There are also a few nifty additions to normal live location sharing present on messaging apps. For example, with Google Maps Location Sharing, people you share your location with can also see your device’s battery power and if it’s charging. And you can also share your estimated time of arrival if you’re navigating to a destination.

According to Google’s support page on Location Sharing, the feature also works when Location History is turned off in Maps. The feature works pretty much the same way on Android and iOS. To start sharing your location, head to the Google Maps app on your Android device, iPhone or iPad, tap the profile icon on the top right, and select Location Sharing. You will then get an option to choose how long you want to share your location (you can select to share you location for up to one full day, or choose to share it until you turn off Location Sharing), along with a list of Google contacts you can share your location with. You can tap the profile of a contact and select Share.

To share you location outside Google contacts, you can select More options in the Location Sharing menu and share the link for your real-time location via other messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage. To stop sharing your location, you can tap the profile of the person you’re sharing your location with and select Stop.

You can also share your estimated time of arrival (ETA) with a contact while navigating to a destination on Google Maps. To do so, open Maps, set a destination, and start navigation. Then, tap More and select Share trip progress to share your route with a contact. Location sharing automatically stops when you reach your destination or when you stop navigation.

Last month, Google Maps introduced a few India-focussed features at its Building for India event in New Delhi. The tech giant showcased features like Live view walking, Lens in Maps, fuel efficient routing, address descriptors, local trains support, among others. According to Google, Live view walking navigation is coming to 3,000 cities in the country. The Where Is My Train feature, which lets users track trains, is set to add support for Mumbai local trains. Local trains support for Kolkata is coming soon, too.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei has teased the launch of a new smartphone, which suggests that the purported Nothing Phone 2a could be launched by the company soon. According to details that have been leaked by tipsters, the UK-based startup led by Pei is planning to launch an affordable version of the Nothing Phone 2 that could be unveiled at the firm’s upcoming event that is scheduled to take place at the next Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024) on February 27.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Nothing CEO Carl Pei confirmed that the company will launch a new smartphone, along with an image of what appears to be a cutout of a dragon from a popular cartoon series. The Chinese New Year — marking the start of the year of the Wood Dragon — will be celebrated on February 10.

While Pei’s post does not specify the name or model number of Nothing’s next handset or include details about when it will be launched, the company has scheduled an event titled Nothing to See that is scheduled for February 27, during MWC 2024. The alleged Nothing Phone 2a was previously spotted on the BIS India website, hinting at its upcoming debut in the country.

Last week, WinFuture’s Roland Quandt leaked the colour options as well as the RAM and storage configurations of the purported Nothing Phone 2a.
